Coloring Comics with Joseph Bergin III and Sloane Leong

Hey, I’m Sloane and I write, draw and color comics. You might have seen my work online or in a few Image series like Change, Glory or Prophet. Robin asked me to drop in and share my recent Comics Coloring Workshop that I held this past weekend at Stumptown Comics Festival here in Portland, OR.

Joseph Bergin III, colorist of Prophet and all around rad artist, was cool enough to come talk with me about comics we like and our personal approach to coloring comics in a way that compliments the art and adds another layer of narrative to the story.

You can find all the comic pages we talk about below and additional workshop notes here.

Inkstuds at the Vancouver Art Gallery

I was invited to give a talk at the Vancouver Art Gallery as a part of the comics related  programming for the Art Spiegelman Co-Mix show. Instead of just having me blather for an hour about comics, I thought it would be more interesting to do a panel with some creators I really liked. I asked Jen Vaughn and Emily Carroll to join and then had quite a hard time, but was eventually able to get Brandon Graham to make a rare public appearance with me. Thanks to all 3 of them for such thoughtful comments on their work and others. Below is a gallery of their own work that we discuss during the talk. The gallery did film it and the video will be posted online at some point soon hopefully. Thanks to Allison Collins and Bruce Grenville from the gallery for asking me.

Patrick McEown

I have been a fan and reader of Patrick McEown’s work for most of the time I have read comics. From his humble early days on Grendel War Child to working on variety of short stories for Vertigo, Dark Horse and Fantagraphics. His groundbreaking short story No Escape, published in the Dave Cooper series, Weasel, is a high point in comics making.

His latest work, Hair Shirt, is just as excellent. I was very excited to talk to Patrick about his comics, and as you can tell, we cover a lot of material. Some accompanying things to check out include these blog posts from Self Made Hero that he wrote up when the book was first released to the UK market. They are very illuminating in regards to his work and process.
