Brian Stelfreeze

This is a recording of a live panel that Brandon and I did at Fanexpo Vancouver back in Novemeber. We were both really excited to talk to Brain Stelfreeze. I have admired his work ever since seeing his super stylistic Batman covers back in the 90s. Brandon’s own attraction to Stelfreeze’s work goes back even further to comics that I can’t remember.

He is probably most recognized for his work on Black Panther with writer Ta-Nehisi Coates. This was a really fun panel that I wish went on longer, but the room guy told us to leave 10 minutes early. Thanks to Brian for indulging us and to Kevin Boyd from Fanexpo for suggesting and setting it up.

Breaking Into Comics Panel with Pia Guerra, Kaare Andrews, Brandon Graham and Ty Templeton

At Fan Expo Vancouver this past year, Brandon Graham and I recorded a couple of live panels. The first, posted here, was on the topic of Breaking Into Comics. We were joined by Pia Guerra, Ty Templeton and Kaare Andrews. My goal was to really come across with the idea that there wasn’t one specific way to “break” into comics. And even the term itself is fraught with challenges. It was a very lively conversation but not completely coherent. There were a fair amount of strong opinions on the stage, so it was interesting to hear where folks were coming from.

Kate Lacour

New Orleans cartoonist, Kate Lacour joined me to talk about her work. Kate has been putting out some really amazing comics that are unflinchingly crafted. Her work explores the body in rough fascinating ways. I found her work to sit with me for quite a while after, exploring odd visual threads and narratives. You can find her work on the excellent studygroup website.

Tim Goodyear

Portland based cartoonist and publisher, Tim Goodyear, joined me to chat about his new book, Video Tonfa. It’s a massive tome collecting his movie watching journals and drawings of classic vhs covers. As a publisher, Tim is the man behind Teenage Dinosaur. He has no web presence for it, but you can find his comics through better comic stores or at conventions in pacific northwest. I like talking comics with Tim, he knows a bunch and has a really rich history in support good underground work and creators.

Jessica Campbell

Jessica Campbell stopped by my office during her book tour promoting new book from Koyama, Hot Or Not. It’s a really funny look at modern artists as creators and as objects. Jessica has a really great sense of humour in her work that comes through quite nicely in Hot Or Not. Jessica also has a smattering of comics on her site and a couple of minis from the much missed Oily comics subscription.

Anya Davidson

Anya Davidson joined me to chat about her new book from Fantagraphics, Band For Life. It’s an amazing complex look at relationships and people under the guise of a story of a punk noise band. I really enjoyed this book and was quite taken by characters. I highly recommend checking it out. Her other new work is Lovers in the Garden from Retrofit. A much smaller work than Band for Life, but uses the shorter form to zero in on characters in an extreme situation.

Anya’s work has a great humour to it as well, that keeps the flow of the work humming along at a great pace.

CXC Tour Report – Midwest Mayhem!

dsc_0557

Since my Dad’s stroke back in May, my life has been pretty hectic, focusing on family stuff and letting the studs kind of trail behind. I already had this trip planned before everything went to crap. Thankfully my good friend Brandon Graham get’s given hotel rooms to stay in because people like him, so I carefully ride his coattails for an opportunity to have somewhere to stay at a comics show. You can read Brandon’s report on our trip here.

CXC aka Cartoon Crossroads Columbus is a comics show out of Columbus, Ohio held in October. This was the second year of an interesting growing show. The show is run by The great Tom Spurgeon of comics reporter fame. I have a lot of respect and affection for Tom. He’s been on the studs many times for the critics roundtables and I love his depth of questioning and knowledge. Tom is joined by an executive committee that includes Jeff Smith, Vijaya Iyer and Kathleen Glosan from Cartoon Books and Billy Ireland Library founder Lucy Caswell. I think Caitlin McGurk from the Billy Ireland is involved too, but i can’t remember her actual role, she’s one of those powerhouse community organizers that makes me feel like I am way too lazy. CXC is a very Columbus affair that features the city as a central figure and touches on the city’s varied art and academic institutions as community partners focusing the wide range of comics interest that’s become more normalized.

This is going to be a length report with a million photos so click read more!

Noah Van Sciver and Seth

My second interview at CXC in Columbus was a conversation between Noah Van Sciver and Seth. It was a blast to do. We threw it together last minute at the end of the day on saturday. It was neat to bring these 2 great talents into a room together. You can tell a lot of these seasoned comics vets have a lot of respect admiration for Noah and it comes through in this. Noah’s latest work is Blammo 9 and Disquiet. You can find the documentary, Seth’s Dominion from the National Film Board on the site for his publisher, Drawn and Quarterly.

We had a lot of folks coming by to check out what was going on. it would be neat to do something like this at a con where folks can listen or watch from another room, but not by on display like panel. I like this dynamic much more. it felt free and comfortable.

Troy Nixey

tbs

Vancouver cartoonist, Troy Nixey joined us for a chat before he moved off to Alberta. Troy’s probably most known for his collaborations with Mike Mignola on writing duties, including the stellar Batman story, the Doom Came to Gotham as well as Jenny Finn.

More recently, Troy has returned to comics after directing the movie, Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark. His most recent story The Black Sinister, is written by Kaare Andrews and is being serialized in Dark Horse Present. This was a really great conversation and thanks to Brandon Graham for joining me interviewer duties.

Sean T Collins

unnamed

While at the CXC comics show in Columbus, I did a couple of interviews in these weird little pod study rooms just off of the festival floor. It was very convenient to have and easy to use.

My first interview was with Sean T Collins. Sean has been involved comics criticism since the early 2000’s. He has been on the inkstuds before for a critics roundtable many years. I don’t see Sean very often, but I thought since we would be at the same show, it would be a good chance to catch up.

Sean has stepped away from directly focusing comics criticism to the greener pastures of tv show reviewing for many high profile entertain sites. He recently he posted a list of 33 favorite graphic novels for the Thrillist.

Sean’s next upcoming comics related project is Mirror Mirror 2 from 2d Cloud. An anthology that he is co-editing with Julia Gfrörer. The contributor list is aces and I am really looking forward to checking it out when it comes out in the new year.
