Barbara “Willy” Mendes joined me to chat about her new collection, Queen of Cosmos Comix Trilogy. It’s a fantastic collection of work that includes a selection of her foundational underground work juxtaposed against her more current work. There is a creative thread connecting the 50 years of comics collected in the book that can only come from Mendes’ unique approach to the work. She weaves a memoir through a re-imagined biblical text that filled with bright and all-encompassing colour. It’s an important collection of work by one of the pioneers in the comic field. Her present work is vital and full of life and fascinating to see where she pushes herself creatively. Her work can be seen at her gallery space in Los Angeles.
